Airport construction will not affect environment: CIDCO

The CIDCO has categorically stated the construction of the proposed Navi Mumbai airport would not affect the environmental balance of the region.

Before starting the construction of the airport, the route of river Ulve will have to be altered by 90°, and river Ghadi that runs along the boundary of the airport site will have to be channelized – this will not affect the environmental balance

CIDCO submitted an environment impact assessment report conducted by the IIT along with Central Water and Power Research Station, Pune, and 12 other national and international consultants to the central government a month ago.

The new project will involve the rehabilitation of the residents of 10 farming villages. The development of the airport will be completed in four phases.

The phase I that is expected to cost Rs4,952-crore will include building of walls and the first air strip etc, and it would be completed between 2010-13.

The phase II, costing Rs2,159-crore, will see building of the second air strip and will be done from 2013-17.
