Multiplexes increase ticket prices

Multiplex operators across the country have increased ticket prices by 10–25 per cent following an increase in occupancy levels, over the last two weeks.

Anticipating a slew of summer releases ahead coupled with two big budget films every month, most operators have increased ticket prices. They are also expected to increase food and beverage prices by 10 per cent. Cinemax will now have a minimum price tag of Rs80-140 for a ticket (from around Rs70) and a maximum of around Rs150-290 depending on the location. The weekend shows will be dearer by another 20-25 per cent. Fame Cinemas has also hiked ticket prices by 10-25 per cent. Initially, the reclining seats used to go for around Rs250 but are now Rs300-350 across some properties.

Things could get even more frenzied in the days ahead with movies such as Kites, Rajneeti, Ravaan, I Hate Luv Stories and 3D animated options such as Shrek Forever After and Toy Story 3 due to hit the screens.
Kites could actually see operators hiking prices by another 30-80 per cent with morning shows expected to be retailed at Rs170-200. The evening screenings could be higher at Rs300-350. Some multiplex operators are also planning a 6:30 a.m. screening to squeeze in more shows.
