Maharashtra state dairy development department is thinking of setting up a dairy SEZ at Dapcheri in Thane.
Nitin Raut, Dairy Development Minister said, “The department has a huge plot of 6,000 acres in Dapcheri,about 150 kilometres from Mumbai. The plot also has a dam.We can start an SEZ here and also use the land for making fodder. The units can supply milk to Mumbai and also make milk products like butter cheese, skimmed milk powder for exports and domestic consumption.”
The land has been earmaked for shifting of tabela (cowsheds) in Mumbai, but has been shelved due to opposition from the owners.
June 1 is observed as the World Milk Day.
Raut also announced plans for dairy tourism at Aarey where in a exhibition centre will come up depicting production of milk to conversion to products such as butter and cheese.
